My personal expertise is not focused on one specific activity that I do, but rather on how a certain lifestyle is incorporated into my life. Healthy eating, daily exercise, and low stress levels impact my daily activities, assisting me with my energy levels in everything that I accomplish throughout the day. My personal experiences throughout my life have encouraged this upon me. It is a scientific fact that if one applies these healthy living habits to his or her daily life, the liveliness of that person's mood will be sure to be brightened. My expertise has been reflected off of my personal experiences throughout my life, especially within the last few years. "Home-cooked" family dinners are required within my household, thus, resulting in perfect portion sizes and non-processed foods. Also, the research regarding autism has caught my attention. It is told that many processed foods could be causing the unknown reasons of why these children are the way they are. Each of these statements influenced me to do a state competition with my high school to help make the world a healthier place. With all of this experience in the health related field, the confidence level of my knowledge regarding it is set fairly high.
My mom has been a house wife for the last fifteen years, she has focused on raising my siblings and I, and making our homelife the best it can be. She was raised in an Italian household where cooking good meals were a priority in life. That trait was passed down to her, convincing her to have the same effect for her own children. By making everything from scratch, and including all natural ingredients, she has spoiled us with the taste of real, good food. Junk food was also at a limited intake. Mom made cookies, but only every once in a while and candy was only served in very small quantities. This small intake of sweets led me to only ingest a limited amount of them a day, thus, leading me to obsess over fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. Homemade meals are not the only healthy factor that is held in my household. Physical fitness was not a form of punishment, but as an enjoyment. During warm evenings we would all go out to throw a football with my dad as my mom cooked dinner. My parents put all three of us kids into soccer at a very small age. This made us have fun, but still exercise, too. TV was only allowed for a certain amount of time throughout the day. So, instead of being couch potatoes, we were outside building forts in the woods or drawing with side walk chalk. Each day was some form of a new adventure for us. As we got older, we kept those traits and apply them to our everyday lives.
Personal experiences affects the way that you live your life. I have been babysitting two autistic children for the last four years of my life and it has definitely made an impact upon me. Each child was encouraged to be on a gluten free diet for the rest of their lives, with a few other special amenities. By chatting with their parents, I have learned how the diet effects the child's entire system, and how it may possibly cause the autism itself. It is not only the gluten but the dyes, metals, and chemicals that are put into our foods to make them last longer or taste better. It is scary to think that the foods that some may eat on a regular basis may be causing such a terrible thing. These facts have warned me to stay clear from certain types of foods with the chemicals that could be chronic.
My senior year I joined a club called Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Within FCCLA, it was encouraged to do a Star Event that will travel to Virginia Beach in the Spring and compete against many other schools. The Star event topic was my choice. I could go from recycling to raising money for an organization to volunteering to help out a certain group. My partner and I decided to raise awareness about staying healthy throughout our school and community. Our project was called "Stir, Step, Steer to Success."
We completed four main events to make our project a gold medal. First, we cooked a healthy meal for the boys basketball team against the top rival in the county, Millbrook High School. We know that not many athletes choose the right foods before they exercise, so by doing so, we helped them gain the right kind of energy in order to win the game. After that event, we held an exercise station for the children at the local elementary school during a curriculum carnival held that night. We had the children complete a simple obstacle course that made their heart pound by the end. We gave out flyers to the children reminding them to always eat healthy and stay active! Weeks later, the local mall and hospital were sponsoring a health fair to advertise to the public what different health resources do and how they can assist the common person. My partner and I organized our own cooking show to be held in a cooking store located in the mall at the time of the fair. At this show we cooked a delicious, healthy stir fry and talked to our audience about the importance of being healthy. It was so enjoyable watching their faces in awe while we mentioned how easy it is to live a healthy lifestyle. FCCLA was having their 65th anniversary, so we gathered up all of the members, plus anyone else who wanted to come, and went on a 65, collectively done, mile walk after school one day . It only took roughly three hours to complete it because we had so much help! By doing this project, it helped my partner and I see how hard it is to encourage people to get their butts up and exercise, thus, making us want to spread the word even more. Throughout this process I learned how to persuade someone to keep a healthy lifestyle and I also learned a few things about nutrition as well. It felt so good being a role model to all of these people and educating them about my personal experiences.
Learning and teaching about nutrition is something that I love to do, that is why I consider it to be my expertise. There are always constant updates about food and health related activities that catch my attention in the news. I am stepping up to the plate to spread the word because it must be done. It is always a good topic to bring up to anyone, because that is who it relates to. I will never get tired about hearing about it because there is always something new to learn. By majoring in nutrition , I plan on going further into the study of the body by become a Physicians Assisstant. By doing this, I will be able to help others with their health habits, thus by doing what I love.
